Funis is a living installation that is formed as a dialogue between space, sound, light and human bodies. The work invites the visitor to become part of an experiential landscape, where a way of doing and being which consciously distances itself from the human-centered tradition of performance emerges. Funis challenges the assumptions of story-focused narration and the stage as a place for performing – instead, the focus is on togetherness, simultaneity and giving space to a variety of agencies.
The Latin word funis can be translated into Finnish as rope or string, among other things. Anatomically, funis means umbilical cord. The work is guided by the meanings associated with these linguistic definitions: union, entanglement, emergence, material formation, twisting, threadiness, and the organic connection of seemingly separate things. How do we perceive the world around us and how are we all connected to each other in one way or another?
