Borderline took place in the heart of the city of Antwerp, one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, where the main railway station is situated right next to a zoo. The performer, walking back and forth along a fixed, straight line on a square in front of the station and the entrance to the zoo, contradicts the speed, mental attitude and myriad of lines that other people create when crossing the square.
Stemming from a movement often seen in captive animals but foreign to this urban human surrounding, the performer's act simultaneously slowly reveals the outlines of an invisible barrier, one to be perceived as either outer (physical) or inner (mental).
Borderline is part of a series titled “Zoo in the City”: a site-specific series that consists of various performance scores dealing with the urban human/animal relationship.
